A new mental fitness course in Hong Kong Polytechnic University

Our brains carry thoughts along neural pathways. When reinforced over time, the thinking becomes “autopilot”. Automatic thinking comes from our survival brain, the limbic system. It can produce negativity biases that result in in cognitive errors.
Mindfulness exercises which pay attention to the present and our sensations can increase our awareness. By being an observer and noticing what is happening in our minds (metacognition), we can detach from our thoughts and make choice about them.
